A Comparative Study of Personality Traits between Long Distance Swimmers and Short Distance Swimmers

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify the differences in personality traits between long distance and short distance swimmers. The researcher used the descriptive method. The subjects were (6) young national Iraqi league swimmers. For measuring personality traits the researcher used Fribourg personality test that measures (8) dimensions of personality. This test consist of (56) item presented to experts. The researcher conducted a pilot study before the real test. Finally he concluded that: There are statistical differences for each of melancholy and controlling traits in the subjects of the study. There are no statistical differences in nervousness, aggression, sociability and calmness. The researcher recommended: • The necessity of concentrating of psychological aspects of swimmers through correct psychological preparation. • The necessity of guiding coaches to improve personality traits and aiming for the positive aspects of swimmers. The researcher suggests that: • It is highly recommended that experts in the field of psychology should be appointed as training staff for all national leagues. • Holding educational courses that enhance the psychological aspect and its effect on an athlete.
