Abstract

The aim of the study was to verify the validity and reliability of a basketball-simulated physical exertion test designed to induce fatigue, by measuring heart rate (HR), lactate concentration (LA) and the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE). The study sample consisted of 20 basketball players from leading teams in the Iraqi Premier League, with an average age of (21.50 ± 3.67) years, With a body mass of (80.50 ± 11.71) kg and a height of (189.00 ± 7.75) cm, the basketball-simulated physical exertion test protocol to induce fatigue consisted of four exercises performed consecutively following a warm-up. Heart rate was measured remotely before, during and after the exercise using a Polar Verity Sense remote heart rate monitor, whilst lactate levels were measured before the exercise and five minutes afterwards using a Lactate Pro2 device. from Arcray; the perceived exertion (RPE) was also assessed upon completion of the test using the modified Borg scale (CR-10). SPSS V22 was used to analyse the research results. The results demonstrated the validity and reliability of the protocol, as all experts agreed that the protocol was suitable for basketball players and that it was able to distinguish between high and low levels of performance. The results also demonstrated the reliability of the test, with the correlation coefficients between groups for all fatigue indicators being higher than 0.70, Furthermore, the Bland-Altman plot also demonstrated the reliability of the protocol, as the differences between the first and second tests were distributed around the mean difference and fell within the upper and lower limits of the 95 per cent confidence interval for the three fatigue indicators.
